Genesis 2:7 (ESV) says:
"Then the Lord God formed the man of dust from the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living creature."
In this verse, we see the intimate act of God giving life to humanity through His very breath. This breath of life not only symbolizes the physical creation of Adam but also represents God’s spirit giving man life and purpose. The same concept can be applied to the idea of being 'born again,' where God's Spirit breathes new life into the believer, creating a spiritual rebirth.
1. The Breath of Life and Spiritual Rebirth
Just as God breathed life into Adam, He breathes spiritual life into us when we are born again. Genesis 2:7 foreshadows this reality: the breath of God is not just the origin of physical life, but of spiritual life. When we accept Christ and are filled with the Holy Spirit, we become a new creation—just as Adam was formed from the dust and became a living being.
John 3:5-6 (ESV) says:
"Jesus answered, ‘Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.’"
2. The New Creation: A Spiritual Union
Just as Eve was created as a partner to Adam, reflecting God’s design for union, the believer is spiritually united with Christ. The imagery of Eve as a 'virgin' form symbolizes purity and newness—qualities we possess when we are born again.
2 Corinthians 11:2 (ESV) says:
"For I feel a divine jealousy for you, since I betrothed you to one husband, to present you as a pure virgin to Christ."
This verse speaks to the believer’s spiritual marriage to Christ, where we are made new, spotless, and prepared for an eternal union.
3. The New Garden: A Life of Fruitfulness
In the new garden of creation, the born-again Christian is called to live in spiritual fruitfulness. Just as Adam and Eve were commanded to be fruitful and multiply in the physical garden, we are called to be spiritually fruitful, sowing seeds of righteousness and reaping a harvest of eternal life.
4. The Ultimate Restoration: The New Heaven and New Earth
The prophecy in Amos 9:13 points to a time of ultimate restoration when the 'plowman will overtake the reaper' and the earth will be filled with overflowing abundance. This is the vision of the new heaven and new earth, where God's people will dwell with Him in a renewed creation.
Conclusion: A New Life, A New Garden
As believers, we are born again into a spiritual reality that mirrors the creation of Adam, but surpasses it in glory. Through Christ, the second Adam, we are invited into a new union, a new creation, and a new garden. Just as God breathed life into Adam, He breathes spiritual life into us, making us new creations in Christ. In this new garden, we are called to live fruitful, abundant lives, walking in the fullness of our union with Christ, the last Adam. This is the hope of restoration, the promise of a new creation where we will dwell with God forever.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for the breath of life You have given us, not only physically but spiritually. As You breathed life into Adam, so You have breathed new life into us through Your Spirit. We ask that You guide us to live in the new garden of Your creation, fruitful and faithful, united with Christ in purity and holiness. May our lives reflect the beauty of this new creation as we walk in communion with You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
